From the seventeenth century up to our modern day, this is the story of a croft and its inhabitants over centuries of rural history. After the croft of Nevabacka is carved out of the Finnish wilderness, the reclusive soldier who makes this his forever home finds himself indebted and susceptible to the demands of the forest folk from whom he has claimed this patch of land.
He and his descendants interact both unknowingly and unwillingly with the characters of the forest just as much as they do with the local villagers. War, religious change, famine, illness and seasons shake the lives of this family and the friends and farmhands who reside here. As the times change, the influence of the marsh and forest magic shift: a spiritual connection, mysterious apparitions, mysteries hiding out of sight.
Whilst the vibrant cast of characters feel like they are born from the land itself in a way that is magical, the hardships and rhythms of the natural world create a sense of reality in this story. – Katrina
