Small but perfectly formed, Swift’s novella is set between the two World Wars, and tells the story of Jane Fairchild, a housemaid to the Niven family. With no mother to visit, her plans to spend her free afternoon with a book are altered by a phone-call and she sets off instead on a romantic liaison, unaware of the pivotal nature of the events that lie ahead. One to read, and re-read.
