Mr B's review

I was a little late to the party with this one, as my colleagues happily remind me.. but nevertheless I am so glad I read it! An incredible story brought to life by Atwood, we follow Grace Marks who has been convicted for her involvement in the murders of her employers. I love that it is based on a true story, and we still don’t know if Grace was truly guilty. Serving her life sentence, some believe her to be completely innocent, others claim she is evil. Partly told from the perspective of Grace, and partly from a new specialist on Mental Health, Dr Jordan, the gripping narrative completely hooks you into Grace’s story and you are never sure if you can trust her. A fascinating look into psychiatry, history and the resilience of a young girl in the 1800s.- Amy

Description

By the author of The Handmaid’s Tale

Now a major NETFLIX series

Sometimes I whisper it over to myself: Murderess. Murderess. It rustles, like a taffeta skirt along the floor.’ Grace Marks. Female fiend? Femme fatale? Or weak and unwilling victim? Around the true story of one of the most enigmatic and notorious women of the 1840s, Margaret Atwood has created an extraordinarily potent tale of sexuality, cruelty and mystery.

‘Brilliant… Atwood’s prose is searching. So intimate it seems to be written on the skin’ Hilary Mantel

‘The outstanding novelist of our age’ Sunday Times

‘A sensuous, perplexing book, at once sinister and dignified, grubby and gorgeous, panoramic yet specific…I don’t think I have ever been so thrilled’ Julie Myerson, Independent on Sunday
