Tess’ Kids Graphic Novel Highlights

It’s always difficult to find graphic novels – and indeed books – that balance on the edge of upper kids’ books to younger teen books; something that is challenging and fun but not inappropriate. Luckily, ‘Snapdragon’ and ‘This Was Our Pact’ are just those graphic novels!
‘This Was Our Pact‘ is a great straight-up adventure for any kids 11 and up. When two boys promise to follow the lanterns released from their village all the way down the river and beyond, they don’t quite count on the coming-of-age adventure that awaits them. Painterly artwork and FirstSecond’s signature chunky, gorgeously produced printing makes this a brilliant gift.
‘Snapdragon‘ is another beauty – colorful artwork and a three legged dog bring together this coming of age tale. Snap feels like a total outsider, but finds her family with the suspected town witch, an ex-biker-turned-animal-osteologist, and her neighbour who feels just as out of place as she does. A few crucial emotional beats elevate this adventure story to a whole new level.
Coming in next is a brilliant follow-up to Lightfall – ‘Mel The Chosen‘. Possibly for a slightly younger audience than ‘Lightfall’, this delightful standalone adventure follows Mel as she realises that growing up as quickly as possible isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Wizard boys, magic ravens, and wishes with a catch make up this fun new kids adventure.
And lastly, a unique mystery adventure story, ‘City of Secrets‘ by Victoria Ying. A young heiress finds an orphan boy hiding in a mechancal building. But someone is after him – and they work together brilliantly to discover the secrets of their families and save the city in the process. With a very painterly art quality, this is not only beautiful but also has some brilliant twists and mysterious turns.
