Blackwater: The Flood by Michael McDowell

Welcome to the flooded town of Perdido, Alabama, where we meet the Caskeys, a family of rich white landowners headed by the powerful matriarch Mary-Love. When Mary-Love’s devoted son Oliver rescues a mysterious woman stranded in a hotel, none of them can imagine how much she will slowly infiltrate each of their lives.

Originally published in the 80s and written by Beetlejuice screenwriter McDowell, this is the start to his highly addictive Blackwater southern gothic horror saga that I just couldn’t put down. If like me, you hate waiting for the next in the series, then you’re in luck – each of the six books is being published every two weeks, and the first four are already available– Emma

EC Comics: Artist’s Edition by Scott Dunbier & Wally Wood

What could be more Halloween than pouring over the EC comic covers that horrified American parents and led their teens down the path to gleefull delinquency.

I only ever got to see knockoff versions or tattered old copies in jumble sales but they certainly hit the mark and I actively remember the visceral response I had to them. Here presented are a choice selection of artwork from their archives, often printed with the artists original overlays and corrections. The remarkable part is just how good the actual art was.

Scratch the surface of smut and gore and these artist were producing artwork way too good to simply dismiss or raise pitchforks against. Oh and there’s some cracking cowboy covers in there too… for the aficionado. – Edward
