We are absolutely thrilled to welcome bestselling and BAFTA-nominated author Emma Jane Unsworth to Bath for her sharp and hilarious new novel, Slags.
Following self-proclaimed ‘last of the party girls’ Sarah and her sister Juliette on a whisky-fuelled campervan trip across Scotland, Slags is a funny, gritty, and delightfully feral look at sisterhood, friendship, and teenage obsession.
Emma Jane Unsworth is a BAFTA-nominated, BIFA-winning screenwriter and bestselling novelist. She has written four novels and a memoir, and has written extensively as a journalist for various publications from The Guardian to Grazia. Her third novel Adults was an instant bestseller when it was published in 2020. She is currently adapting Slags for television with The Forge.
Emma will be in conversation with author and award-winning journalist, Lauren Bravo. Lauren has written about fashion, food, pop culture, travel, feminism, and life, for publications such as Grazia, Cosmopolitan, The Telegraph and The Guardian. She is the author of several non-fiction books, including What Would The Spice Girls Do and How To Break Up With Fast Fashion, as well as two novels, Preloved and Probably Nothing – which was our Amy’s book of the year in 2024!
About the Book:
Slag. Noun. A promiscuous woman, of cheap or questionable character. Mostly derogatory. Sometimes affectionate.
Takes one to know one…
It’s the 1990s. Sarah is 15, obsessed with boy bands, sex and getting drunk on Malibu. Most of all, she’s hung up on her teacher, Mr Keaveney. Fast forward 26 years. Sarah is 41, the last of the party girls. But the mad nights out are losing their shine. And her teenage dreams are now distant, queasy memories. There’s only one thing for it: an adventure.
So, Sarah sets off with her sister Juliette on a whisky-fuelled campervan trip across Scotland. The sisters have never been alike, but they know all the dark corners of each other’s history – and it’s time to dig up some demons, kicking and screaming. Because the things that once defined us shouldn’t define us forever, should they?
From the acclaimed author of ANIMALS and ADULTS, SLAGS is a no-holds-barred, frank and heartfelt exploration of sisterhood, friendship, and teenage obsession.
