We are so overjoyed to announce the return of Jess Kidd to Mr B’s, to talk about her new novel ‘The Night Ship’.
We have loved Jess and her unsettling, clever, and darkly comic novels since her debut novel ‘Himself’ back in 2016. Her book ‘The Hoarder’ became one of Emma’s favourite books on publication, and if you’re ever in the shop chatting about historical, magical crime, we can guarantee that any of our booksellers will put ‘Things in Jars’ into your hands. In fact, we were all such superfans that we insisted on hosting Jess in for an evening of chat about ‘Things in Jars’ back in 2019!
Now we’re thrilled to have this Costa Short Story Award winning author back at Mr B’s to talk about her new novel ‘The Night Ship’, which dives into the infamous tale of the shipwreck of the Batavia, and one young boy linked to the wreck more than 300 years later, all told in Kidd’s iconic, glittering prose.
A curious and bold young girl called Mayken boards the Batavia, the most impressive sea vessel of the age. During the long voyage, Mayken must find her place in the ship’s busy world, and she soon uncovers shadowy secrets above and below deck. As tensions spiral, the fate of the ship and all on board becomes increasingly uncertain.
Gil, a boy mourning the death of his mother, is placed in the care of his irritable and reclusive grandfather. Their home is a shack on a tiny fishing island off the Australian coast, notable only for its reefs and wrecked boats. This is no place for a teenager struggling with a dark past and Gil’s actions soon get him noticed by the wrong people. Some secrets won’t stay buried forever, and Mayken and Gil, two outsiders whose fates are inextricably intertwined, must save each other before it’s too late.
