We could not be more excited to welcome back Man Booker-shortlisted author Ruth Ozeki, to Mr B’s to discuss her brand new novel ‘The Book of Form and Emptiness’. Ozeki’s previous novel, ‘A Tale for the Time Being,’ has been a huge Mr B’s fave ever since its release back in 2013, and has spent many years in our ‘Hall of Fame’, becoming one of our most recommended books.
‘The Book of Form and Emptiness’ is every bit as special and unique as its predecessor as we follow the life of thirteen-year-old Benny Oh who has just lost his beloved jazz musician father in a tragic accident. His mother’s own grief leads her to a path of hoarding, and the more objects she collects, the more these objects begin to talk to Benny. The local library gives Benny a place of refuge from the misery of school and doctors, and its there he falls in love with a street artist with a non-binary pet ferret, and meets a homeless philosopher-poet who encourages Benny to find his own voice. It’s also here that he meets The Book, that one that’s narrating Benny’s life for us and teaches him to listen to the things that truly matter.
In true Ozeki style, she takes us on a whirlwind narrative journey, from the raucous pleasures of old big band jazz through to climate change and the importance we place on our own material possessions.
Join us as we chat to Ruth about this exceptional book, followed by a Q&A with the audience.
Doors at 6:30pm for a 7pm start. Tickets include a glass of wine, and 15% off any books purchased on the night.
