We’re absolutely thrilled to host 24-year-old Ailsa McFarlane, for her very first in-person UK event for her debut novel ‘Highway Blue’! It’s fair to say that over the course of the last year the Mr B’s team have loved many books that we haven’t quite been able to properly celebrate, and ‘Highway Blue’ swept both Emma and Nic off their feet, back to the open roads of America, but an America very much of McFarlane’s own making.
A stark and intense short novel in which we meet Anne-Marie at a low-point in her life – alone, bleary-eyed thanks to the empty bottle perpetually by her bedside and struggling to overcome the sudden end of her relationship with her husband Cal many months before. But sometimes things have to get worse, before you can find out if there’s any chance of them getting better. And when Cal reappears he immediately draws Anne-Marie into unwelcome drama and violence that forces them both to flee San Padua in a beat up car for an open road that promises more angst than freedom.
‘Highway Blue’ has already been declared one of the 10 Best Debuts of 2021 by the Observer, and we couldn’t agree more! We hope you’ll join us for a fun evening sure to include some inevitable swapping of roadtrip stories to hearing how Ailsa created her own version of modern America, and just how it felt to have her debut novel published amidst a worldwide pandemic.
Doors at 6:30pm for a 7pm start. Tickets include a glass of wine, and 15% off any books purchased on the night.
