There’s a lot of love for the music of the American South at Mr B’s (as you may have noticed walking past our record player!), so when we found out that Emma John had spent two years on a musical odyssey through this part of the world, well: it was a no-brainer. We had to invite her to tell us all about it.
With a classical training behind her, Emma was disenchanted with her violin by the time she discovered bluegrass ,and decided to throw herself into its culture and landscape. ‘Wayfaring Stranger: a musical journey in the American South’ takes us on a joyous, spontaneous tour, from rigid London life to the smallest of Appalachian towns, from fiddle festivals to odd jam-sessions filled with unforgettable characters. A wonderful book that seamlessly weaves music and travel together to open up a hidden world of musical adventure. And it’s all done with the same self-deprecatory wit that Emma first revealed in her debut “Following on: A Memoir of Teenage Obsession and Terrible Cricket”.
Join us for a true ‘travels from your armchair’ session in our cosy Bibliotherapy room as Nic chats to (and geeks out with) Emma about her incredible journey and about everything from the Rockygrass bluegrass festival to banjo jokes (“What do you say to a banjo player in a suit? Will the defendant please rise!”). Fiddles and banjos not unwelcome, and there’s a high chance we’ll be digging out and giving a spin to our (and Emma’s) favourite bluegrass and tunes.
