The Mr B’s team are longstanding fans of Madeline Miller’s incredible writing. Back in 2011, The Song of Achilles collectively floored us, and we are thrilled to invite her back to the shop for the paperback release of her latest novel Circe, inspired by Homer’s Odyssey and the story of the first witch of western literature.
Circe is a lesser God; the daughter of the powerful Sun God Helios, but neither at home with Gods nor Mortals. Yet talent comes in many forms and it is evident from the beginning that Circe is strong, resilient and has a dark power. Banished to the island of Aiaia, after Zeus believes her witchcraft a threat, Circe encounters some of the most famous figures in Greek Mythology, including the Minotaur, and Odysseus, who changes her life completely.
In her exquisite new novel, Madeline Miller weaves Circe’s vivid and fierce voice throughout this narrative, contrasting a larger-than-life story with tender humanity. Circe is a compelling, complex and bittersweet retelling of a tale deeply embedded in so many others, and a masterpiece in its own right. We can’t wait to chat to her, and to welcome you all to our new events space!
