This summer sees the publication of a new novel by the award-winning British-Turkish novelist Elif Shafak, and we are one lucky bookshop to be able to join in the celebration. As Turkey’s most widely read female author, Shafak has dedicated an entire career to dissolving barriers both in the UK and beyond, be it through her brilliantly imagined novels, replete with characters so real you’ll expect to see them on your lunchtime walk (and so memorable you’ll see them in your dreams), or as a campaigner for women’s rights, LGBT rights and freedom of speech.
As 10 Minutes 38 Seconds in This Strange World begins, a young woman is dying. Leila, or Tequila Leila, as she’s known on the streets of Istanbul where she works as a prostitute, feels life drain away from her body, but for a short while, her mind and imagination are set free. Leila’s mind is flooded with memories from her life, of her closest friends and the moments when her path crossed theirs, taking us on a journey like no other. The beginning of the novel may thus be the end of Leila’s life, but it’s only the beginning of her story.
Shafak’s new novel is thoroughly alive with the rhythm and the atmosphere of Istanbul – its people, its contradictions, flavours and history. Through this moving, original and deeply intelligent story, Shafak continues to ask us to see beyond our immediate surroundings, to the truths and experiences which lie beyond. We’re delighted to welcome her to Bath, and can’t wait for you all to join us on July 3rd.
