This September we’re delighted to welcome one of the most inspirational public figures to have entered the national limelight in recent years to Bath. In 2016, Gina Miller initiated a case against the British government over its authority to trigger Article 50 (thereby implementing Brexit), without parliamentary approval. She was the lead claimant behind this historical court case, and its success brought with it a backlash of sexist and racist abuse, as well as threats against Gina and her family. This was not the first time, however, that Gina stood up for what she believed was right and just.
“Rise” is the story of the draw-backs, injustices and victories which brought Gina to take such a step in favour of constitutional justice. Born and raised in Guyana, she attended boarding school in England at the age of eleven, facing racial prejudice at an early age. She later went on to study Law and Marketing in London, and co-founded SCM Direct, a disruptive investment management company, and the True and Fair Foundation, which provides funding and support to smaller charities. In ‘Rise’ she shares the story of how every stage of her life so far, from single motherhood to professional challenges, have taught her to stand up for herself and her conscience.
In uncertain times full of mixed messages, we are extremely proud to welcome Gina to share her story with our community. Join us for what is sure to be an inspiring evening talking politics, adversity, diversity and a quest for justice with a true beacon of civil courage.
Tickets £6 or £5 for students. Ticket price includes author interview and book-signing, a glass of wine and 15% off all books on the night.
