In recent years, Olivia Laing has emerged as a spectacularly original voice in English-language non-fiction (and one of Jess’s absolute favourite authors all-round!), bringing stories of art, exclusion and the politics of identity centre stage. It was therefore a given that her debut novel would turn out to be something quite out of the ordinary.
Taking place in the summer of 2017, the word ‘timely’ doesn’t begin to describe “Crudo”. Occasionally, reading it feels like experiencing its chaotic world in in real-time, but it’s also a movingly specific story about love and truth in a dangerous year. We meet its protagonist, a reimagined version of the post-punk artist and writer Kathy Acker when, having just turned forty, she’s about to commit to marriage. Juxtaposing rebellion with companionship, rage with intimacy, and anger with hope as well as humour, Olivia’s first foray into fiction is a hugely affecting image of love at the end of the world. And if you don’t know who Kathy Acker is – well all the better. Come along to the event to find out!
We’ve already recommended Olivia’s book “The Lonely City” to hundreds of readers, from New York travellers, to explorers of queer identities and creativity. With “Crudo”, we’re convinced that a whole new host of you will discover Olivia’s intelligent and moving work. This evening is your chance to get off to the best possible start.
