From an exciting new voice, comes a one-woman adventure to give Bear Grylls a run for his money.
“The Word for Woman is Wilderness” features nineteen year-old Erin – a travel virgin who, frustrated by the lack of female explorers on “Into the Wild” style expeditions, embarks upon a journey of her own. On her quest to challenge the archetype of the rugged male explorer, Erin begins a lone voyage through the Arctic Circle, across America and finally to a lonely cabin in the Alaskan woods. With the fire of feminism and adventure in her belly, Erin is on a mission to prove her capability, but she soon finds herself questioning exactly what it is that makes this experience so different for a woman, and ultimately – what is wilderness?
You’d be forgiven for feeling as though you’ve opened the pages to someone’s private travel diary, as Erin explores her thoughts on everything from the lunar landings, space missions, time capsules, Jack Kerouac and Rachel Carson and charts her experiences and feelings about them by making her own documentary film.
Our Emma, is already a huge fan of this inspiring debut with its fresh feminist writing, earthy humour and the knowledge that it imparts along the way. Now we are excited to introduce you to the book’s talented young author, as Abi joins us in the bibliotherapy room this March.
