Tara Westover’s academic qualifications are awe-inspiring. As well as her BA from Utah’s Brigham Young University, she’s earned an MPhil and a PhD in History from Cambridge and been a visiting fellow at Harvard too. Not bad by anyone’s standards. But now bear in mind she didn’t do a day of school until she turned 17.
On Tuesday, March 6th, Tara will be coming to Mr B’s to tell us about her incredible young life – about being raised in the Idaho mountains by extremist parents for whom school and the medical establishment were a complete no-no; about growing up in fear of an uncontrollably violent elder brother; and about a childhood heavy on work and light on freedom in a household with a siege mentality and frequent “end-of-the-world” conspiracy panics. Then, remarkably, we’ll hear how she escaped that world and, with incredible perseverance and drive, self-taught her way to college against the vehement wishes of her family, learning the conventional accounts of world history she had been denied, and falling in love with education.
Tara’s memoir “Educated” is published on 6th February 2018 and is one of those books that refuses to leave you alone, even after you’ve finished it. Tara’s remarkable life story is both dramatic and inspirational. It offers a window on a world that most of us can’t easily imagine and asks so many questions about education, childhood, family and the meaning and lure of home. We’re excited to be able to recommend the book to you this Spring and thrilled to be hosting Tara here at Mr B’s.
