As winter grips, be transported away with us for an evening to a remote Canadian lakeside, the sometimes idyllic, sometimes oppressive setting of Tristan Hughes’ incredible novel Hummingbird.
Sitting Down Lake is home only to fifteen year-old Zachary and six other odd and beleaguered characters – including Zach’s father, the increasingly unpredictable Lamar and his newly arrived enigmatic niece Eva and a Finnish leech-trapper plying his trade in the lake’s shadowy waters. Through the awkward interactions of this cast and Zachary’s own reminiscences, a portrait is painted of an eccentric community bearing more than its fair share of burdens. As they traverse the lake and its banks together, Eva and Zach try to understand the events of their past and to find some hope and inspiration for the future amidst the natural beauty that surrounds them.
Here at Mr B’s Tom was an early-adopter of Hummingbird and Henry and Nic quickly followed him in reading it and falling under its spell. When we come across a book that three of us have read and that each of us rate as one of our books of the year, then it’s time to start shouting loud about it to all of you!
This novel is exquisite. It’s poignant, funny and wonderfully unpredictable and we cannot wait to spend an evening in the company of its author Tristan Hughes talking about the writing of Hummingbird, his four previous books and life as an Ontario expat teaching writing in Cardiff.
