Now that Nick Hunt; there’s a man who likes to walk. Three years ago a room full of us sat, mouths agape, as he told us how, in seven arduous months, he’d retraced the steps of the great Patrick Leigh Fermor in walking solo from the Hook of Holland to Istanbul. I can still picture his ruined boots, as described in his book of the journey Walking the Woods and the Water which by the end were held together more by melted tarmac than anything actually intended as a sole.
Glutton for punishment that he is Nick’s latest epic strolls have been guided not by a legendary travel writer but by the wind. Four winds to be precise. In the incredible new Where the Wild Winds Are he recounts his travels in northern England, the Balkans, alpine Switzerland and southern France, each time guided by the path (that can’t be the right word – we’ll ask him!) of a named wind. The Mistral we all know, and perhaps the Bora of Croatia and Slovenia seems familiar but with Nick we also get to learn about the Foehn, a wind which blows in its own sickness, and Britain’s one wind with a name, the Helm.
Do come along to meet Nick and to join in on an evening of wanderlust, adventure, meteorology, history and myth.
