One summer evening in 2009, musical prodigy Edwin Rist broke into the British Museum of National History and stuffed a suitcase full of rare bird specimens. His stolen loot comprised of 299 priceless feathers, collected over the centuries from across the world. At first his theft went unnoticed by the museum.
When Kirk Wallace Johnson discovered that the thief evaded prison, and that half the birds were never recovered, he embarked upon an investigation of his own, that would take him across the world and lead him into a fiercely secretive underground community obsessed with the Victorian art of salmon fly-tying.
Now, Kirk will join us in the bibliotherapy room to introduce “The Feather Thief” – his fast-paced, thrilling portrayal of an extraordinary heist, of the man behind the crime, the history of these precious exhibits and the incredible twists in this true story. Here at Mr B’s, we’re already huge fans of this captivating new book and its highly-engaging author, whose knowledge and passion for this strange tale and the case that surrounds it, is completely infectious.
Head to Mr B’s this May to talk about our cultural obsession with nature and unearth the depths of an intricately plotted natural history heist, in the company of a brilliant new author.
